On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, students from the AP Biology class at Clear Creek-Amana High School, taught by Mrs. Amy Marling, visited the University of Iowa (UI) Department of Biology to perform their gel electrophoresis lab. The students were assisted by current UI Biology undergraduate students Samiksha Annira, Clayton Gordy, Tarun Kadaru, and Taylor Milefchik; Biology Ph.D. student, Rachel Harney; and a Biology Instructional Services Specialist, Olga Miakotina. In addition to performing their experiment, the students visited the Fritzsch Lab in the UI Department of Biology to hear about the research of lab members Karen Thompson, Ning Pan, and Israt Jahan. Anna Gaw, the Biology Undergraduate Advisor, also provided information about the various Biology degrees at the UI. In attendance was also the Principal of Clear Creek-Amana High School, Mr. Mark Moody. The students “thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially going into a research lab,” says Mrs. Marling. “They are already asking me when they can come back.”
