Dr. Jeffrey L. Denburg (1944-2025)

Dr. Jeffrey L. Denburg passed away on the 25th of July 2025. Jeff joined the Department of Biology in 1977 and retired in 2014.

Jeff majored in Chemistry at Amherst College, kicking off his scientific career with two publications as an undergraduate – one as the first author in The Journal of the American Chemical Society. Jeff then moved on to do his PhD at Johns Hopkins University, working with William McElory, where Jeff characterized the enzymology of firefly luciferase. With a PhD under his belt, he worked as a postdoc with Richard O’Brien at Cornell University, isolating and characterizing the acetylcholine receptor of the lobster. He was then recruited by Adrian Horridge to join his group in Canberra, Australia. Horridge suggested that he work on cockroaches because they can regenerate their limbs. This set Jeff on a lifelong journey to make sense of how growing neurons navigate their paths to connect with one another. Jeff aspired to become an astronaut, but his poor eyesight put paid to that dream. Nonetheless, he spent one summer at NASA at the Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA, as an intern working on a project to send insects into space.  

At the University of Iowa Jeff’s research focused on the way synapses formed in the nervous system, specifically how neuronal processes in cockroach embryos regenerate following surgical damage. This work was supported continuously for more than 25 years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Along the way, he received a prestigious NIH Career Development Award (1979-84) and was director of the department’s NIH Program Project Grant on Generation of Neuronal Form and Function (1988-93), a major collaborative endeavor involving multiple neurobiology labs in the department. His manual dexterity and hours of dissecting neurons led to the development of many new and ingenious techniques that he generously taught to colleagues on campus and visitors from other institutions. He was a pioneer in the field in using monoclonal antibodies to study how nerve axons “find” their target cells. 

A dedicated teacher, he had an unusual ability to engage students in stimulating class discussions and intellectual give-and-take at all levels. His teaching contributions include the development of popular non-major courses, Biology of the Brain and Scientific Basis of Biological Warfare, and courses essential for the department’s Neurobiology track, as well as participation in significant parts of the Introductory Biology course sequence for majors. His intellectual curiosity and willingness to entertain provocative and unconventional concepts enriched his teaching and challenged his students. His inventiveness as a teacher often took the form of creative demonstrations, including lecturing while roller-skating to illustrate the brain’s ability to direct several activities simultaneously. His trademark lecture attire – red socks, sneakers, and outrageous ties, reflected the creativity that he brought to the classroom. Among his extensive service contributions to the department, he directed the Biology Undergraduate Honors Program for 11 years, again demonstrating his commitment to excellence in education.

Jeff was nothing if not curious, his wide range of interests extended from solar exploration to music, philosophy, and literature. On an occasion when we (Kay) were talking about one of the infirmities that come with age, it launched us into a digression on the wonders of the mammalian digestive system. This led Jeff to remark that, "There is nothing in biology that is uninteresting." Kay quoted this during a Foundations of Biology lecture, calling it ‘Denburg’s principle’.

Jeff Denburg was a natural contrarian, delighting in taking the opposite side of an argument, not to provoke, but to explore ideas and keep the conversation lively. He enjoyed friendly debate, challenging assumptions with humor, curiosity, and always with his unforgettable, broad smile.
