Professors Tina Tootle and Joshua Weiner have been named 2024 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general-scientific society and publisher of the journal Science.

The researchers in the Department of Biology tested the effects of dimethyl phthalate, a chemical used by some industries and found in consumer products such as insect repellent and plastics. The test subject was a freshwater snail native to New Zealand that has spread worldwide and is considered a bellwether for how other aquatic organisms may be affected by pollutants.

Kristýna Bubeníková, a Fulbright Scholar from Charles University in the Czech Republic, is conducting research at the University of Iowa’s Forbes Lab. Her work focuses on the evolutionary interactions between parasitoid wasps and their gall wasp hosts, using genetic and ecological analyses to uncover species diversity and host relationships. Through this experience, she has expanded her expertise, adapted to new research environments, and fostered international scientific collaboration.

UI Biology Professor Sarit Smolikove has been named an Associate Editor for GENETICS in the Genome Integrity Transmission section.
